Brief description and aims of work
Fundació Clínic per a la Recerca Biomèdica (FCRB) was created to manage the research activities of Hospital Clínic i Provincial de Barcelona (HCPB), a third party to FCRB. HCPB is a university tertiary hospital located in Barcelona. It is a public institution with a long reputation of excellence in care provision, training and research at national and international level. The Hospital Clinic has 3971 employees (23% doctors, 55% nurses and 22% clerical and other supportive staff).
Drs. Aadela Zabalegui, RN, PhD, and Esther Cabrera, RN, PhD, have been working in the area of elderly and nursing intervention research for the past ten years. Since 2000 Adela Zabalegui and Esther Cabrera have been taking part in a national research network in elderly care. The most important aims of this network are: 1) to analyse the type of care provided to dependent elderly people by the formal informal caregivers system; 2) to analyse the consequences of caregivers care activities; 3) to describe the healthcare policies and resources for the elderly; and 4) to design health support interventions for informal caregivers. The phases of this network includes: a systematic review of the literature, focal groups to understand elderly long-term care needs in Spain, and a national study to analyse elderly care. The latter study focused on the evaluation of the patient documentation in nursing homes. As a result of this nationally funded research, papers and doctoral theses are in course. Adela Zabalegui and Esther Cabrera have worked together in different projects related to elderly and aging as well. One of them was the project PECA (the elderly' selfcare program) which analysed the effectiveness of a nursing intervention program related to social support, nutrition, and physical activities in people over 65 years of age. An educational program that included a videotape and a booklet has been developed.
